SCO summit: PM Modi talks about AI-based Indian language platform Bhashini, humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday virtually addressed the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and he talked about Bhashini, India’s AI-based language platform to remove language barriers within the SCO.

PM Modi further said that Bhasha Manch should be taken as an example of digital technology and inclusive development. During the virtual session PM Modi said, “SCO can become an important voice for reforms within the United Nations and other global institutions. I am glad that Iran is joining the SCO family as a new member.

At the summit, they discussed the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan and how the situation in the country directly impacts the security of all member states.

The Prime Minister said, “India’s concerns and expectations with regard to Afghanistan are similar to those of most of the SCO member states. We have to make united efforts for the welfare of the people of Afghanistan…It is important that the land of Afghanistan is not used to spread unrest in neighboring countries or promote extremist ideology.’

PM Modi said that terrorism is a global threat which disturbs regional harmony.

Meanwhile, he also said, “We have to fight against terrorism… Some countries use cross-border terrorism as an instrument of their policies and give shelter to terrorists.” SCO should not hesitate to criticize such countries. SCO countries should condemn this. There should be no double standards on terrorism.”

Earlier, it was reported that Iran will officially attend/join the meeting as a new permanent member of the alliance.

In September 2022, India took over the SCO chairmanship from Uzbekistan at the Samarkand summit.
