The health department is yet to be convinced by the views of the ICMR chief even if he continues to improve the pediatric ICU infrastructure in the state fearing a third wave. “The health department was supposed to give its opinion in the first week of August, when discussions were going on regarding the revised dates for the state board exams. Ratul Chandra, general secretary of the Assam State Primary Teachers Association (ASPTA) goswamiHe said that if possible, the Assam government should start opening primary schools in consultation with ICMR and the Centre. He said that at least in those districts which have recovered to a large extent from Covid, offline classes can be started following COVID-appropriate behaviour.
“Hardly 10 to 20% of primary students in government schools in Assam can be covered through online education. A major part of these students are first generation learners and most of the students of class 1 and class 2 are only because of online classes. Can’t attend as their parents don’t have access to online mode of studies. We would welcome a move to open at least higher classes of primary section,” Goswami said.
