AISHE 2020-21 states that there has been a significant increase in the enrollment of SC, ST and OBC students in higher education institutions between 2014-15 and 202021.

Enrollment of students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in higher education institutions has increased significantly between 2014-15 and 2020-21, with ST students accounting for nearly 47 per cent registered an increase of Rs., as mentioned in a report. to all India survey on hire Education (AISHE) 2020-21.

The report released by the Ministry of Education showed that out of 4.13 crore students enrolled in 2020-21, 14.2 per cent belonged to SC category, 5.8 per cent to ST category and 35.8 per cent to OBC category. The remaining 44.2 per cent students were from other communities.

“The increase in enrollment of SC students in 2020-21 as compared to 2019-20 is 4.2 per cent, while the increase in 2019-20 as compared to 2018-19 was 1.6 per cent. Moreover, the overall increase in SC student enrollment since 2014-15 is 27.96 per cent. The enrollment of ST students has increased from 21.6 lakh in 2019-20 to 24.1 lakh in 2020-21.

“This increase (11.9 pc) is much higher than the increase (4.3 pc) recorded last year. Notably, the overall increase in ST student enrollment from 2014-15 is 47.00 pc.

As per the survey report, the enrollment of OBC students has increased from 1.42 crore in 2019-20 to around 1.48 crore in 2020-21. Also, the overall increase in OBC student enrollment since 2014-15 is 31.67 percent.

The Ministry of Education has been conducting the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2011, covering all higher education institutions located in the country and imparting higher education.

The survey collects detailed information on various parameters such as student enrolment, teachers’ data, infrastructural information, financial information etc.

For the first time in AISHE 2020-21, Higher Education Institutions or HEIs have filled the data online through Web Data Capture Format (DCF) developed by Department of Higher Education with the help of National Informatics Center (NIC). ,

The AISHE report states that the total enrollment in higher education has increased from 3.85 crore in 2019-20 to around 4.13 crore in 2020-21 (an increase of 28.80 lakh).

“The annual rate of increase in enrollment has also shown improvement over the years. The growth in enrollment is 7.4 per cent in 2020-21 as compared to 2019-20, which was 3 per cent during 2019-20 and 2.7 per cent during 2018-19. Moreover, the overall increase in enrollment since 2014-15 is 20.9 per cent.

“A total of 2.12 crore (51.3 pc) male and 2.01 crore (48.7 pc) female students were enrolled in higher education. In 2019-20 the number of students enrolled was 1.96 crore and the number of students enrolled was 1.89 crore.

The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education has also reached 27.3 per cent. GER is the proportion of 18-23-year-old adults attending college in the total population. It has been calculated according to the 2011 census.

Talking about institute-wise enrolment, the survey states that despite the large share of private institutes in the country, most of the enrollment is in government institutes.

“Government universities which constitute 59.1 per cent of the total universities contribute 73.1 per cent of the total enrollment of students. While private universities account for 40 per cent of the total higher education institutions, only 26.3 per cent of the total enrolment.
