A senior official said a 13-member central team on Monday began the review of the mid-day meal scheme in schools in West Bengal.

In the joint review mission, officials from the Union Ministry of Education, a nutritionist and a representative from UNICEF, as well as V Bhaskar, director of the PM Poshan Yojana, also held a meeting with state education department officials.

The officials, who are due to conduct their review by February 6, visited several schools in North and South 24 Parganas districts on Monday.

The team, which reached the city on Sunday evening, will check the infrastructure of the school and the quality of food served to school children under the mid-day meal scheme.

“This is a routine visit. We do such reviews every year across states. We will try to visit as many districts as possible. Today we met the school officials Education Department,” an official of the team said after the meeting.

He said that after conducting the review, when they will talk to the school children and their parents, the team will prepare the data which will be submitted to the Centre.

The team visited a school in Rajarhat in North 24 Parganas district, where they spoke to the parents of the students and inquired about the quality of food served to the children there. The team then went on to visit schools in South 24 Parganas district.

The Center recently allocated a fund of Rs 372 crore under the PM Poshan Yojana to the state to provide nutritious food to the school students. It has also released an additional fund of Rs 250 crore to the School Education Department for infrastructural development.
