School drop-out, mid-day meal cook turned math teacher

From being the mid-day meal chef of Farakka Nayansukh Shrimant Pal Primary School to teaching him maths, Bishakha Pal’s determination left netizens stunned. Every day around 360 students wait for their lovely Bishakha aunt’s hand-cooked meal for lunch. One day, when the class teacher was struggling to teach maths to the fourth grade students and Bishakha came forward to teach maths to the students. In simple words, he told the students about the law and method of division.

Paresh Das, teacher of Farakka Nayansukh Shrimant Pal Primary School, recorded a video of Pal’s motivational activity and posted it on his social media. Due to poverty and livelihood, Bishakha left her studies after class 10 and worked as a cook in this school for many years. But deep down her love for education never diminished, so whenever she got the opportunity, she stood outside the threshold of various classes and listened to the teachings of the teachers.

“When I was taking fourth grade maths class on Thursday, many students were not facing some problems. Suddenly Bishakha Di, the cook, came to the class and requested her to give the children a chance to take the class. I didn’t want to discourage him,” Das said.

“Handing over the chalk, I wanted to see how she managed to calculate. Surprisingly, she did it so skillfully that I couldn’t stop taking the whole scene on my mobile phone.

“Whatever he did was absolutely right and his way of teaching was very clear. I had not imagined that the video would go viral, it was just a token of appreciation on my part,” Das said.

‘I cook to earn my living but I still have an insatiable desire to read. The rules and tricks that I once learned from school teachers are the same as what I have taught. Bishakha Pal blushingly said that if the students get any benefit of what I teach, then I will be proud.
