Locals found the body of Kuldeep Munjpara floating in a pit outside the school in Dhama village while they were searching for him.

An eight-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled pit outside a government school in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district. The police gave this information on Saturday.

Locals found him floating in a ditch outside the school in Dhama village when they went looking for Kuldeep Munjpara when he did not return home till Friday evening, an official of Jhinjuwada police station said.

The villagers alleged that the officials had dug the pit under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme, but failed to cover it.

“The boy drowned in a pit filled with water seeping from the pipeline. His body was recovered by villagers, who went to search for him near the school,” said sub-inspector NL Sankhat.

No one had seen the boy going near the pit. When he did not return home till evening, his parents started looking for him, the officer said. The dead body has been sent for post-mortem.

Villager and community leader Suryakant Varsani said that the administration will have to take action so that such accidents do not happen in future.
