SBI stated that fraudsters are sending APKs and messages via SMS and WhatsApp to redeem SBI reward points.

The State Bank of India (SBI) has warned its customers about receiving fake messages. Customers are being cautioned about fake reward point redemption notifications.

SBI offers its customers points as a corporate-wide loyalty programme for regular transactions made through a variety of banking channels. Also, the value of each point is 25 paisa. Many users do not redeem their points for several months, leaving a significant balance that hackers can exploit.

Customers have been advised by the bank not to click on any links sent by SMS or WhatsApp, nor to download any applications or files.

In response to the growing number of spam and fraud incidents, SBI has asked its customers to exercise caution. Cybercriminals have started employing a new approach to defraud consumers, primarily through fake APK links that pretend to allow users to redeem rewards points. The bank has stated that it never provides links over SMS or WhatsApp, and it has warned consumers to exercise caution.

For those who don’t know, APK stands for Android Application Package. APK is the application file format used by the Android operating system to distribute and install apps on devices.

In a post on X (previously known as Twitter), the bank stated that fraudsters are sending APKs and SMS messages to redeem SBI reward points. According to the post, SBI never provides links or unsolicited APKs over SMS or WhatsApp. SBI also urges its customers not to click on any such links or download unfamiliar files.

“Attention SBI Customers: Beware of fraudsters. It is observed that fraudsters are sending APKs and messages over SMS or WhatsApp for redeeming SBI reward points. Please note that SBI will never share links or unsolicited APKs over SMS or WhatsApp. Do not click on any such links or download unknown files. Stay Safe and Secure!!,” reads the post.
