Say Goodbye To Fake Pics: Google’s AI Image-Detection Tool Set To Debut This Summer

New Delhi: The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has led to a flood of fake and AI images on the internet, social media and feeds. If you are also facing the same epidemic where it is becoming difficult to distinguish fake from real, then soon you will get rid of this problem. Tech giant Google has announced that it is rolling out an ‘About This Image’ tool this summer that will help users spot AI generated, fake images and videos.

Initially, the new feature will be available in English in the US. The company hasn’t specified a timeline for rolling out the feature globally.

How will the feature work?


Google upcoming tools will let users see image context such as: when the image and similar images were first indexed by Google, where it may have first appeared, where it was seen online (such as news, social, or fact checking) on sites).

“With this background information on an image, you can get a better understanding of whether the image is credible – or if you need to take a second look. For example, regarding this image, you will be able to see that News articles have indicated that this image depicting the phased moon landing was AI-generated,” Google wrote in the blog.

How to use the Context option


Once the tool is launched, users will be able to find it by clicking the three dots on an image in Google image results, searching with an image or screenshot in Google Lens, or swiping up in the Google app. Go to an image you want to know more about.

“Later this year, you’ll also be able to access it by right-clicking or long-pressing on an image in Chrome on desktop and mobile,” the Google blog said.

Google also announced that it will soon roll out generative image capabilities so that each of its AI-generated images will have a markup in the original file for users to reference. Creators and publishers will be able to add similar markup, so you’ll be able to see a label in images in Google Search, marking them as AI-generated. You can expect to see these from a number of publishers including Midjourney, Shutterstock and more in the coming months.
