VIJAYAPURA/DAVANGERE: About a dozen of posters of Veer Savarkar were pasted at the Congress office on Sunday night, triggering tension in the Jal Nagar police station limits on Monday.
The posters of Savarkar were pasted on windows, doors and walls of the Congress office. The police removed them.
BJP district Yuva Morcha president Basavaraj Hugar claimed he had put up the posters as Congress leaders were insulting Savarkar by saying that he never fought for freedom. “Condemning their statements, I have pasted posters. Congressmen should read Savarkar’s books and study his contributions. They should learn to respect a great leader like Savarkar. Otherwise, we will paste his posters at Congress leaders’ houses too,” he said.
The BJP office is in the same locality. Both parties deployed activists to keep peace.
District Congress president Raju Algur demanded Hugar’s arrest. “We will file a complaint against him soon. If police fail to take the incident seriously, we will launch district-wide protests,” he warned.
He alleged that BJP leaders are trying to create panic by pasting posters of Savarkar. “If they repeat it, we will have to paste some leaders’ posters that are unwanted for BJP workers,” he said.
KPCC campaign committee chairman MB Patil said in Davangere that the BJP was involved in cheap politics. “It was misusing the names of Swami Vivekananda, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh in the past. When it realised their ideology, it shunned them and now chanted the mantra of Savarkar,” he said.
