Chennai: AIADMK Former interim general secretary and late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s close aide VK Sasikala has urged the Tamil Nadu government to procure sugarcane of all sizes for Pongal gift hampers.

He said that the state government had fixed the size of sugarcane to be procured for Pongal gift hampers at 6 feet which was not possible.

Sasikala said that the size of sugarcane depended on the soil from where it was grown and it was not in the hands of the farmers. The former AIADMK general secretary said the government should not stick to fixing the size of sugarcane and should buy sugarcane of all sizes from farmers. Significantly, the state government was buying sugarcane from farmers at the rate of Rs 33 per cane.

The former interim general secretary of AIADMK said in a statement on Tuesday that the DMK Govt MGR and J. Stalling all pro-people projects initiated by previous AIADMK governments of Jayalalithaa.

He also alleged that DMK people were indulging in hooliganism and this was not acceptable. Jayalalithaa’s former aide said that during Jayalalithaa’s rule, the government had taken strong action even if AIADMK people were involved in any malpractices.

Sasikala alleged that “if people do not pay ‘hafta’ or security money to DMK people, no activity, including construction, is allowed”.

He called upon the state government to be more people-friendly and said that the government should take strict action against anyone involved in violence.
