Sasikala’s ups and downs

Born in 1956 at Thiruthuraipundi in Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu, then after marrying M. Natarajan in 1973, Chinnamma started her life as a normal household lady. But, over time, she emerged as an assistant to one of the most powerful women in Tamil Nadu.

In 1984, Sasikala used to run a video parlor named Vinod Video Vision in Chennai.

Her husband M. Natarajan was a public relations officer in the government and was posted in Cuddalore district at that time. At that time, IAS officer Chandralekha was the collector of Cuddalore district.

Jayalalithaa and Sasikala came closer
It was only at the behest of Chandralekha that Vinod Video got an opportunity to film the meeting in which Jayalalithaa was speaking. It was during this assignment that VK Sasikala met Jayalalithaa for the first time. Since then the closeness between the two increased.

The closeness between both Sasikala and Jayalalithaa was so much that both of them acquired all the wealth and property.

When Jayalalithaa became chief minister for the first time in 1991, she used to consult Sasikala for everything. From this time people started calling Jayalalithaa Amma and Sasikala as Chinnama.

When Amma i.e. AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa passed away in the year 2016, there was a strange atmosphere in Tamil Nadu politics. Speculation about the succession in the AIADMK had intensified with his colleague Chinnamma ie VK Sasikala taking over the reins of the party from behind the scenes.

However, in the meantime a party worker O Panneer Selvam i.e. OPS had taken over the reins of Tamil Nadu but preparations for a coup were going on inside the AIADMK, till now Sasikala, who was running the party and government from the previous seat, decided to take over and OPS. Nominated himself as the leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party to remove him from the post of Chief Minister.

After endless resort politics with the party’s 122 MLAs locked up in a luxury Golden Way resort by the sea, the AIADMK people agreed to make Sasikala their leader and head of government. OPS had to resign within a few months of becoming the Chief Minister.

VK Sasikala’s hold on power has been fluctuating after Jayalalithaa’s death.

The way was now cleared for Chinnamma as the chief minister’s chair and AIADMK leader. But just as Chinnamma was preparing to take over as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, in February 2017, the Supreme Court sentenced her to four years in a disproportionate assets case worth Rs 66 crore.

Chinnamma’s political ambitions were dashed. After that she could not even contest elections for ten years.

In such a situation, now he had to find someone in the party who could work for him. E. Palaniswami or EPS was discovered as such because he was also a minister and a strong party leader. But as soon as the Chief Minister was sworn in, the EPS started gaining a hold on the administrative and political system of Tamil Nadu.

Apart from getting hold of the party, Sasikala now faces many other challenges.

On the other hand, the EPS, after compromising with the OPS, stopped paying attention to the people close to Sasikala, who was lodged in Bangalore Jail.

According to sources, due to all these reasons, Sasikala wants to gauge her strength through road shows and then will make up her mind to consider a new strategy.
