Sandeep Kapoor will next be seen in Imtiaz Ali’s Chamkila with Parineeti Chopra and Diljit Dosanjh.

Actor Sandeep Kapoor has had an interesting journey in Bollywood. From Shilpa Shetty’s Sukhee to Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, he has starred in several women-centric films in his career. He is all set for his upcoming film Chamkila, headlined by Parineeti Chopra and Diljeet Dosanjh. However, the actor didn’t realise he had ventured onto a path of bringing women’s voices forward, till he exclusively spoke to News18 Showsha.

Sandeep said, “It’s a coincidence which you have pointed out. I always wanted to do these kinds of stories. Theek hai, these aren’t massy films, but they are films which will make you think.” Sandeep’s filmography also includes Sridevi starrer Mom. Sandeep, who has worked with Sridevi and her family for different films, recalled what it was like when they first heard about the actress’ demise.

“I worked with Sridevi ji but I had no scenes with her. I didn’t get to spend time with her on set. But I remember, I was shooting for Ek Ladki… in Chandigarh with Anil ji and Sonam Kapoor. I wrapped up for the day and came home. The call time for the next day was 9 am. When I woke up, I got a message that the shoot was cancelled due to certain circumstances. Then the production guy told me about the tragedy. Anil ji and Sonam were shooting with us only in Chandigarh and Patiala. So, the whole shoot was paused. Overnight, Anil ji and Sonam were taken to Delhi to be flown back to Mumbai,” he said.

As for Chamkila, the film is a biopic of Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila and his wife Amarjot Chamkila. The duo and two members of their band were killed on March 8, 1988, in an assassination which remains unresolved. The film will be directed by Imtiaz Ali.

Speaking about working with Imtiaz Ali, Sandeep said, “He’s a great guy. On the first day of the shoot when I met him, he said, ‘Hi, I think I’ve known you for years.’ I asked him how. He said, ‘I’ve seen so many of your auditions, now I think I’ve known you for a long time.’ He was so approachable. It was a lovely learning experience to work with him.”

Sandeep came to Mumbai in 2015 to pursue his passion for acting. He was a Vice President in a corporate firm but left his job after hearing Boman Irani encouraging people to follow their passions during the Filmfare Awards.
