Samsung may bring back vapor cooling chamber technology with 2022 smartphones

According to a recent report, South Korean giant Samsung is rumored to bring vapor chamber cooling to its 2022 smartphones. Samsung previously introduced vapor chamber cooling to some of its devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, but the technology was lacking in the company’s latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. Now, the company is reported to bring it back with its 2022 smartphones. The report, published in Digitimes, says that suppliers are gearing up for Samsung’s vapor chamber development as the deployment of technologies like 5G begins to accelerate, and chipsets are growing faster than ever.

A vapor chamber cooling solution improves heat dissipation on performance laptops, PCs and smartphones. On smartphones, they consist of a flat vacuum-sealed metal canister, which holds a small amount of liquid. When heated, the liquid turns into a gas, cools and condenses, and passes through a secondary channel back to the heat source. This process, combined with the larger surface area of the chamber, allows heat to dissipate faster than a section of solid metal or small heat pipe. For a smartphone, cooler temperatures are good for the battery, and the chipset also runs at its optimum best in cooler temperatures.

The DigiTimes report states that this technology is not expected to arrive on Samsung smartphones this year.
