Samsung Galaxy M52 5G review: Solid battery and performance outweigh its minor flaws

Samsung has been aggressively adding 5G connectivity to its mid-budget smartphones, and the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G is a testament to that commitment. On paper, the phone comes with various attractive features which include a large 6.7-inch screen with 120Hz refresh rate, 5,000mAh battery, and a 32-megapixel front camera. But above all, the company is flaunting the device’s sleek design, which measures 7.4mm in thickness – 21 percent sleeker than the older-generation Samsung Galaxy M51. All of them come with a starting price of Rs 29,999 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and Rs 31,999 for the 8GB + 128GB option. Both the models are available with discounts on Amazon and Flipkart for a limited period.

For our review, we tested the top-tier 8GB RAM variant, which adopts a charcoal gray finish, codenamed ‘Blazing Black’. NS Samsung Galaxy M52 5G An icy blue color option is also available. With a price tag of around Rs 30,000, the phone will compete with equally popular devices like Xiaomi Mi 11X 5G and OnePlus Nord 2 in India. Before we give our verdict, here’s what you need to know about the smartphone:

Design and performance: As mentioned, the phone comes with a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with full-HD+ resolution (1,080×2,400 pixels) and 120Hz refresh. Since there is no adaptive refresh rate, users can only choose between the standard 60Hz or 120Hz. At first glance, the Galaxy M52 5G easily stands out as any premium looking smartphone in the market. Despite the big screen, the sleek form factor does make a difference, and the Galaxy M52 5G doesn’t look like a crappy brick. Additionally, it weighs barely 173 grams, 23 grams lighter than the Mi 11X 5G and 16 grams lighter than the OnePlus Nord 2 5G.

In terms of display performance, the Galaxy M52 5G offers enough brightness and deep black to suit both outdoor and indoor settings. For a company that champions technology, the display was crisp, and we managed to watch several shows on the OTT platform without any complaints about colors. The Samsung Galaxy M52 5G also sports a polycarbonate body that looks like a glass. Users will still get a smooth glossy finish on the rear panel but there will be isolated spots and even scratches. In that case, a protective case may just suffice. That said, it would still be difficult for a phone with a large screen and sleek design to fit into the deepest pocket of trousers. But the beautiful patterned design and slim look at the back easily rectifies these minor flaws.

Display and Software: The Samsung Galaxy M52 5G is powered by a 6nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G octa-core chipset that offered a smooth and efficient performance during our testing. We were able to carry on with daily tasks like web browsing, email, social media, and even heavy gaming. With four to five apps running in the background, the phone didn’t face any issues – mind you, all this with a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. We also played notable racing and action titles like Asphalt 9 and Garena Fire Max, switching back and forth at times, and the 8GB of RAM managed to make both apps run with slight stutter. During our gaming sessions, the phone (at least indoors) did not face any heating issue.

However, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G comes with loads of bloatware that clutters the initial experience. Third party apps like Snapchat, Amazon, and Facebook are removable, so make sure you decide what to choose. Prepare yourself for the occasional promotional notification from the Galaxy Store too. With the latest Android 12 OS, let’s see how long it will take Samsung to upgrade to Android 11-based One UI 3.1 on the phone.

In terms of Geekbench CPU benchmarks, the phone’s single-core test falls short of mid-budget rivals such as the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, but is better at multi-core performance. For customers planning to buy a good phone around Rs 30,000, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G easily manages daily tasks like social media and web browsing without worrying about lag issues.

Camera: Unlike quad rear cameras Galaxy M51, the successor Samsung Galaxy M52 5G comes with triple cameras inside a rectangular module with a negligible bump. However, like the older-gen smartphones, the new device doesn’t offer an excellent camera performance. Most photos were strangely sharp during our testing and high saturation levels were again present on the Galaxy M52 5G. Galaxy M51 and . We also had similar experiences with Galaxy A52S 5G. Additionally, the tertiary 5-megapixel macro camera was not capable of delivering enough performance.

To clarify, this doesn’t mean the rear cameras had poor performance, but photography enthusiasts will miss the natural colors (and some variations) on their photos and videos. For customers who enjoy occasional photography at family gatherings or trips, the rear camera (64-megapixel main + 12-megapixel ultra-wide + 5-megapixel macro) on the Galaxy M52 5G is a perfect choice regardless of application. will provide good quality. correct filter. Coming to the 32-megapixel front camera, you won’t get grainy photos, but the saturation level is again pretty high. In most daylight conditions, the Galaxy M52 5G’s front camera left skin very fair – natural colors and lack of details. But this also means that selfies come out quite well in low light. Customers who enjoy taking selfies will want to pay attention to this.

Battery: over the past few years, samsung Phones are coming with batteries that rarely fail to deliver. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G exceeded expectations in terms of battery – in one case, more than the company claimed. Samsung says users will get up to 17 hours of internet usage time, but we also managed to get around 20 hours, including gaming at a high refresh rate. Throughout our testing, we barely used the phone with the standard 60Hz refresh rate.

However, Samsung isn’t particularly known for fast charging technology, and likewise, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G supports 25W fast charging – not the fastest on the market. It comes with 18W charging brick. With the latter, it took over an hour and a half to fully charge. At the same time, 62 percent battery was found in one hour of charging. For perspective, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G supports Warp Charge 65 and the Mi 11X 5G supports 33W fast charging. However, the other two phones also come with smaller batteries.

Decision: Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G deserves a lot of attention, especially when there is already a Galaxy A52s 5G in the market with similar specifications. Mind you, the Samsung Galaxy M52 5G is more affordable and lacks features like an IP67 rating or quad rear cameras, unlike the Galaxy A52s 5G. There may also be some who prefer the OnePlus Nord 2 5G over the competitors as it performs better in certain areas like cameras and fast charging. However, Samsung’s after-sales service is also worth considering at this price point.

Personally, the Galaxy M52 5G exceeded many expectations in terms of build quality and overall performance. It stumbled in other areas like Face Unlock which barely works in low light conditions. The fingerprint scanner that is integrated into the power button is not always responsive either. Additionally, there’s no more than 128GB of storage option, but users can expand the memory with a 1TB microSD card (sold separately). Having said that, if you are planning to buy a new phone this sales season, then this is your best chance to get the latest-gen phone with future-proof 5G connectivity. In short, the Galaxy M52 5G has bettered the mid-budget phone wars with value for money performance and great battery life.
