Samsung Exynos W920 Launched as First 5nm Wearable SoC; Supports the new Samsung-Google UI

Samsung announces its latest process for wearables Samsung Exynos W920. The new processor integrates an LTE modem and is the first in the industry to be built with a 5-nanometer (nm) Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) process node, which is said to offer the powerful yet efficient performance that demands Next generation wearable devices. “Wearables like smartwatches are no longer just great gadgets. They are now an increasing part of our lifestyle to keep you fit, safe and alert,” says Harry Cho, Vice President of Systems LSI Marketing samsung Electronics said. “With the Exynos W920, wearables of the future will be able to run applications with a visually appealing user interface and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected with faster LTE,” he said.

The Samsung Exynos W920 features two Arm Cortex-A55 cores for higher performance as well as power-efficient processing and an Arm Mali-G68 GPU that delivers nearly 20-percent better CPU performance than its predecessor and ten The fold boasts of better graphics performance. With enhanced cores and improved performance, the Exynos W920 enables faster application launches and a more interactive 3D graphical user interface (GUI) with up to a qHD (960×540) display. The Exynos W920 comes with a fan-out panel level packaging (FO-PLP) design that allows the company to make the chipset size as small as possible. The SoC includes the Exynos W920, Power Management IC (PMIC), LPDDR4 and Embedded Multimedia Card (eMMC) in a single package. Samsung said the compact size of the processor allows the smartwatch to have a bigger battery or a more sleek design.

The Samsung Exynos W920 employs a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, instead of the main CPU, to enable Always-On Display. Samsung says this reduces display power consumption under Always On mode compared to previous Exynos models.

For connectivity, the Exynos W920 features a 4G LTE Cat.4 modem as well as a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 for speed, distance and altitude tracking during outdoor activities. Samsung said in its release that the Exynos W920 supports a new integrated wearable platform Samsung has jointly created with Google, and will be first implemented on the upcoming Galaxy Watch 4.
