‘Safety harness, crash helmet’: Center’s safety provisions for riding with child on bike

New Delhi: With India having two-wheelers for the general public, the Center is now ensuring that there are safety provisions for a child carrying a motor cycle.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has drafted rules in the Motor Vehicles Act, recommending safety provisions for two-wheelers while riding a motor cycle with a child below the age of four.

Safety Provisions for a Child Carrying on a Motorcycle

The draft recommends that if a motorcyclist is carrying a child who is four years of age or younger, the driver is required to secure the child with a harness.

The harness should consist of a pair of straps that make up the vest to hold the driver side by side. This way the driver can be sure that the child’s upper torso is securely attached.

The draft rules the layout specifications of the harness to be lightweight, adjustable, durable and waterproof. The harness should be of heavy nylon or multifilament nylon material with high-density foam and be able to carry a weight of 30 kg.

Draft rules recommend the use of a crash helmet if your child is between nine months and four years old. The helmet should fit snugly over the child’s head. A bicycle helmet can also be worn.

In addition to safety equipment, the draft rules also specify a permissible speed limit when traveling with a child. The speed limit should not exceed 40 kilometers per hour with a child riding as a pillion.

These draft rules have been notified by the Ministry through an official gazette and feedback has been sought from the public within thirty days.
