The layoffs affected both freshers and experienced employees at Amazon India offices in Bengaluru, Gurugram and other places.

The company has closed most of the businesses which are in the early stages of development.

Last week, the Labor Commission office in Pune sent a summons to Amazon regarding mass layoffs and voluntary separation policy.

The letter to the IT employees union has asked for a joint discussion on January 17 on the alleged layoffs by the company in India.

“The livelihood of thousands of employees and their families has now become vulnerable. As per the procedures laid down under the Industrial Disputes Act, the employer cannot retrench an employee who is on the muster roll of the establishment, without prior permission from the appropriate government,” Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of Employees Union Newborn Information technology Staff Senate (NITES) said in a statement.

In November last year, Amazon issued a voluntary separation policy offer for its employees.

In the same month, the Union Ministry of Labor summoned Amazon India to appear before the Deputy Chief Labor Commissioner in Bengaluru in connection with alleged forced terminations by the company.

“You (Amazon) are requested to attend this office without fail on the said date and time either in person or through an authorized representative along with all relevant records in this matter,” read the ministry’s notice.

The development comes after a complaint was filed by the employees’ union NITES, in which it accused Amazon of violating labor laws.

In a letter to Union Labor Minister Bhupendra Yadav, NITES claimed that Amazon employees were forcibly removed from the company.

Earlier this month, Amazon confirmed that it was laying off around 18,000 employees and that many teams would be affected, particularly Amazon Stores as well as People, Experience and technology (pxt) org.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement that they were not done with the annual planning process as previously noted, and that “I expected more role cuts in early 2023”.
