Marco Jansen stars as Sunrisers Eastern Cape thrash MI Cape Town by two wickets in SA20

Sunrisers Eastern Cape all-rounder Marco Jansen turned the SA20 on its head with a blistering knock that thrashed MI Cape Town by two wickets at Newlands on Wednesday.

The visitors were staring down the barrel before Jensen launched an attack that will be remembered for a very long time.

The 22-year-old smashed 66 off just 27 balls – with 28 runs coming in one Rashid Khan over – to swing the momentum in Sunrisers’ favour.

The MI Cape Town skipper was sent off in the 16th over for hitting four sixes and a four.

“At that point, we had to have a plan, we had to pick a bowler. After the first ball went for a six, I just decided to see what happens and try and go with it,” Jansen said after the match.

Sunrisers skipper Aiden Markram had won the toss and elected the home team to bat first and his decision paid off when Sisanda Magala removed Dewald Brewis early.

Grant Roelofsen (56 off 36) and Ryan Rickelton (46 off 36), however, rebuilt the MI Cape Town innings before the pair were dismissed off three deliveries by Otneil Baartman (2/21).

Roelof van der Merwe (2/21) followed when George Linde and Sam Curran fell in successive balls but the home team fought back to be 171/6 at the break.

Sunrisers’ chase was derailed from the start as they lost four quick wickets before Tristan Stubbs began the recovery with 28 off 21 balls. However, the Proteas T20 International was run out by Sam Curran to put MI Cape Town back in charge.

But that was before the Johnson blitz and Sunrisers can now momentarily celebrate coming out of the log cellar.
