South Africa’s new T20 league SA20 has announced its playing conditions as the inaugural season will see some interesting changes compared to other franchise tournaments. The inaugural season of the SA20 will begin on January 10 as six teams will play 33 matches. Unlike IPL where there are four playoff matches – one eliminator, two qualifiers and one final, SA20 will have only three play-off matches consisting of two semi-finals and a final.

The new franchise league tournament has brought a new change in the playing conditions whereby the captain will decide the final playing XI after the toss.

Each captain can nominate 13 players to field before the toss. After the toss, each captain will have to take the major responsibility of selecting their final playing XI as the two remaining players will automatically become substitutes.

The SA20 has also made some changes to the points system which will encourage the teams to play a fearless brand of cricket to get that extra point.

The winning team will be awarded four points and will also have a chance to score a bonus point, earning a total of five points. The bonus point will be awarded to the team that achieves a run rate of 1.25 times that of the opposition. In case of no result, both the teams will be awarded two points, while the losing team will not get any points.

In addition, the following rules have been adjusted:

  • The pace of play will be preserved without suspension, with captains charged with in-game penalties for slow over-rates through fielding restrictions.
  • The league also made a major amendment to the free-hit rule, providing that a bye cannot be awarded if bowled out if the ball hits the stumps.
  • Positive and aggressive fielding will be encouraged. No runs can be scored if a direct hit is deflected off the stumps in a deliberate attempt to run out the batsman.
  • A team may take two strategic time-outs of 2 minutes 30 seconds each innings.

In the event of teams finishing equal on points, the right to advance to the final and the play-offs will be determined as follows:

• The team with the most wins;

• If still tied, the team with the most bonus points;

• If still tied, the team with the highest net run rate;

• If still tied, the team with the highest number of wins wins over the other team(s) who are tied on points and have the same number of wins;

• If still tied, the team with the highest run-to-wicket ratio in the entire tournament;

• If still tied, the team with the highest wickets to runs ratio in the entire tournament.

In a No Result declared match, the run rate does not apply.

The first semi-final will feature the team at the top of the group stages against the fourth-placed team. The second semi-final will be between the second and third placed teams respectively. The winners of both the semi-finals will meet in the final.
