Bangladesh lost three wickets early in their quest for their maiden Test win against South Africa on the fourth day of the first Test at Kingsmead on Sunday.

Bangladesh posted 274 for the win, with South African spinners Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj taking all three wickets in five overs for 11 for three off the new ball.

Off-spinner Harmer got Shadman Islam caught at slip for zero in the second over, before left-armer Keshav Maharaj took two wickets in his third over.

Maharaj hit a boundary off Mahmudul Hasan Jai, who scored a century in the first innings, and found the gap between bat and pad.

Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque scored two runs before going back to his stumps and was leg-trapped before the wicket.

The late afternoon collapse undermined the good work done by Bangladesh with excellent bowling and fielding performances on the opening day.

South Africa appeared to be in control of the match when they reached 105 for one at lunch in their second innings.

But Bangladesh came back strongly and bowled out the home team for 204 runs.

Fast bowler Abadot Hossain took three for 40, while off-spinner Mehdi Hasan took three for 85 in 35 overs.

Dean Elgar scored 64, his second half-century of the match, and debutant Ryan Rickelton was stranded on 39 when the last three wickets fell for two runs off seven balls.

Mehdi bowled with excellent control, as he did in the first innings, allowing Mominul to use his pace bowlers in less time.

Bangladesh took four wickets in 28 overs between lunch and tea and conceded only 52 runs.

South African captain Elgar, who scored 67 in the first innings, was twice out at slips after scoring 34 off Mehdi Hasan and 43 off Abadot.

But Bangladesh made up for the errors with a brilliant catch from Yasir Ali at the slips and a silly mid-off by Shadman, while substitute Nurul Hasan ran off Harmer with a straight-hit from the cover boundary.
