Ruturaj Gaikwad was dissapointed after Chennai Super Kings succumbed to their third loss in four matches away from home.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by eight wickets at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday.

Ruturaj Gaikwad was disappointed after CSK succumbed to their third loss in four matches away from home so far. He felt that his batters could have done a bit more and scored some more runs.

“We finished well with the bat, couldn’t have asked more with the situation we were in. After powerplay, we couldn’t capitalise on the start we got and we kept losing wickets at regular intervals,” Ruturaj Gaikwad said at the post-match presentation.

After being asked to bat first, CSK were dealt an early blow in the form of Rachin Ravindra. Then the skipper was sent back by Yash Thakur. Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja batted at a decent pace and ensured that there were no more casualties. Rahane perished in trying to break free, and neither Shivam Dube nor the Impact Sub, Sameer Rizvi, had a significant impact.

Despite wickets falling around him, Jadeja held the innings together on a tricky surface that was on the slower side and notched up his first fifty of the season. Moeen Ali took his time before taking on Ravi Bishnoi for three consecutive sixes to inject momentum into the CSK innings. After Moeen’s departure, MS Dhoni teed off to give his side the finishing kick.

“I would say we were 10-15 runs short. Slightly difficult with such a total, with the impact sub-rule you need 10-15 or even 20 runs extra. Pitches like these seem sluggish to start off with but with dew coming on it gets better, 190 would have been a good score.” Gaikwad added.

Given the late flourish provided by MS Dhoni, CSK seemingly had the momentum but could not really take it into their bowling effort. A wicket-less powerplay left them scrambling for wickets in the middle overs as LSG openers KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock made classy fifties.

“One area we would like to improve in taking wickets in the powerplay. That will put pressure on the opposition. We need to work on it,” Gaikwad said.

Chennai will next travel back home to Chennai where they play three games back-to-back, the first of which will be against Lucknow, and Ruturaj Gaikwad will aim to avenge this defeat.

“Good to play them again (next game at Chepauk). We will come up with good homework done now that we have three home games,” he said.
