City government officials said on Thursday that around 650 Delhi residents are still stranded in war-torn Ukraine, while 215 people belonging to the national capital have been brought back so far. Government officials said that according to the list given by the Center, about 870 people from Delhi were in Ukraine.

Till Wednesday night, district officials, including district magistrates, sub-divisional magistrates, visited the homes of more than 550 students who have either been evacuated or are still stranded in Ukraine, officials said.

Government officials also said that the families of over 600 such students have been contacted over phone and offered necessary help.

Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot tweeted on Thursday, “Delhi government is in constant touch with the families of those stranded in Ukraine.

The Delhi government has asked district authorities to reach out to the families of students evacuated from war-torn Ukraine or those still stranded there to help them and assure them that all necessary steps are being taken for their welfare. .

Senior government officials said that many students who had returned to their homes during the outreach exercise lauded the Indian government’s efforts to bring them back to the country.

Officials said they also spoke about difficulties reaching borders within war-torn Ukraine, lack of coordination, and their concerns about their studies and future.

According to government officials, there were over 870 people from Delhi in Ukraine and out of which more than 215 people have been brought back to the national capital through evacuation flights till Wednesday night.

“We are still in constant contact with the families of those stranded in Ukraine. We are providing them with whatever help they need. We have put them in touch with other higher officials involved in the evacuation process and are also providing them with helpline numbers.

A senior government official, requesting anonymity, said families of more than 600 students have been contacted by phone, while district teams have visited homes of more than 550 families whose children are either in Ukraine. Are stranded or have recently been evacuated.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday urged the central government to bring back Indians stranded in Ukraine at the earliest and provide them all possible help. India began evacuating about 14,000 of its stranded civilians on 26 February following Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
