Russia’s Sergey Lavrov Arrives in India for G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meet on Wednesday

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reached the national capital on Tuesday night to attend the two-day G20 foreign ministers’ meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday night to attend the two-day G20 foreign ministers’ meeting.

The meeting is being held on Wednesday and Thursday amid Russia’s growing confrontation with Western powers over the Ukraine dispute.

Lavrov is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday, during which the two sides are expected to comprehensively review bilateral ties.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, during Lavrov’s visit to India, Lavrov and Jaishankar will hold talks on a number of regional topics, including “developments in Ukraine”.

“The Ministers will exchange views on topical international affairs, including India’s SCO Chairmanship and G20 Chairmanship as well as coordination of approaches at the United Nations, BRICS and RIC. They will also discuss a range of regional topics, including building security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, the current situation in Afghanistan, and developments in Ukraine.

The statement said Russia supports India’s G20 chairmanship in its commitment to promote a unified agenda that will restore confidence in multilateral diplomacy and prevent fragmentation of the global economy.

“We share the relevance of India’s stated priorities: ensuring inclusive and sustainable economic growth; accelerate progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals; reforming multilateral institutions; digital modernization; and increasing economic participation of women,” the statement said.

Those attending the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting include US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, Germany’s Annalena Bierbock and British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell Fontellas, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajjan, Australian Penny Wong, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Indonesian Retno Marsudi and Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero also attended the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting.
