The strike at the plant came during the latest wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine that have killed at least nine people and caused nationwide power cuts.

The European Union’s top diplomat said on Thursday that the Russian attack in Ukraine, which led to the disconnection of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant from the grid, was a “serious breach” of nuclear security.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the interruption to the power supply, which was restored by Thursday afternoon, meant emergency diesel generators had to be used to cool the plant, risking a nuclear accident. It had increased a lot.

“This is a serious breach of nuclear security by Russia,” Borrell told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of EU development ministers in Stockholm.

He said, “Zaporizhzhya is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe … and Russia is threatening the entirety of our united European continent, including Russia.”

The strike at the plant came during a fresh wave of Russian attacks across Ukraine that have killed at least nine people and caused power cuts across the country.
