Russian hackers target countries, organizations outside Ukraine with 29% success rate: Report

Russia’s state-backed hackers have launched multiple cyber espionage operations on allied countries Ukraine Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February this year.

The details were published in a report by Microsoft, which said that the cyber aspects of the current war extend far beyond Ukraine and reflect the unique nature of cyberspace. The Russian embassy in Washington has so far not responded to requests for comment, but the country has, in the past, denied conducting foreign cyber espionage missions, saying it goes against the country’s foreign policy.

Microsoft’s report says researchers have found that 128 organizations in 42 countries outside Ukraine were also targeted by the same groups that launched devastating cyberattacks on Ukrainian entities in covert, espionage-focused hacks.

The report said that outside Ukraine, the United States was the most targeted country. The report said member countries of the NATO alliance were also marked in the attacks.

In addition to these, targets included organizations based in Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Poland, as well as Finland and Sweden, which in the past expressed their desire to join the NATO alliance. Microsoft’s report states that hacking against affiliates was successful about 29 percent and, in some cases, it even led to data theft.

Earlier, in another report, Microsoft indicated that the cyberattack laid the foundation for military missions in Ukraine. The latest research pointed to six incidents since the invasion when cyber attacks against targets in Ukraine appeared before military attacks.
