On the sixteenth day of its war in Ukraine, Russia has achieved less and fought more than expected at the start of the largest land conflict in Europe since World War II. The Russian invasion of Ukraine entered its third week on Thursday, with Russian forces continuing to bomb major cities and desperate civilians hoping to escape through the agreed-upon safe corridors. Thousands have been killed and more than 2.3 million have fled the country since Russian troops entered Ukraine on February 24. The besieged cities are suffering from shortages of food, medicine, heat and electricity, and thousands of stranded civilians were expected during the temporary ceasefire agreed on Thursday by both sides – though most previous attempts failed due to incessant shelling. Citizens trapped inside Mariupol searched desperately for food and fuel as Russian forces continued to bomb the port city on Thursday, while satellite photos showed a massive Kremlin convoy that had been driven out of the Ukrainian capital and again was deployed. Meanwhile, a shrinking number of well-known companies are still doing business in Russia, even as hundreds have announced plans to cut ties. Burger King restaurants are open, Eli Lilly is supplying drugs, and PepsiCo is selling milk and baby food, but not soda.
