Russia moving towards third nuclear plant, Ukrainian government tells US

Russian forces have now seized two Ukrainian nuclear power plants and are moving towards a third, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a call with US senators. Volodymyr Zelensky said a third plant is currently at risk, the Yuzhnoukrensk Nuclear Power Plant, which is located 120 kilometers to the north. Mykolaiv, one of several cities in Russia, was trying to besiege on Saturday.

One of the plants under Russia’s control is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Plant in the southeastern city of Enerhodar. The other is Chernobyl, which is not active but is still staffed and maintained. Previous Russian shelling had set fire to the Zaporizhzhya plant which was extinguished without radiation.

Meanwhile, Russian forces opened fire on Ukrainian civilians who were resisting the invasion. Protests also broke out in Kherson, the first city to be captured by Russia. One million people have fled Ukraine since the war began.
