The protest was led by Delhi minister Raj Kumar Anand, AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj and party leader Adil Ahmed Khan.

The AAP on Monday staged a protest outside the BJP headquarters here and accused the saffron party of flouting rules over swearing-in of Lt Governor-nominated leaders in front of elected representatives at the MCD House.

The protest was led by Delhi minister Raj Kumar Anand, AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj and party leader Adil Ahmed Khan.

On January 6, the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House was adjourned without electing a mayor and deputy mayor as BJP and AAP councilors exchanged heated words and the presiding officer Satya Sharma refused to administer the oath to the first alderman. But was assaulted and not the elected representative.

Only four aldermen were able to take the oath before an uproar in the House.

The AAP alleged that the BJP first administered oath to the elderly people to give them the right to vote in the election of mayor and deputy mayor.

“We are here to protest what was done on January 6. We assume that these nominated aldermen were sworn in first before they could be given the right to vote. We want a statement from the Lt Governor that he will not vote and only then will our protest end.”

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had on January 3 nominated 10 aldermen to the MCD House.

The AAP had alleged that all the nominated members were BJP workers and the civic body had sent their names directly to Saxena without informing the city government.

Aldermen refers to people who are experts in their field. However, they do not have the right to vote in the mayoral election.
