Royalty to Rock Bottom: Why does Congress have a lot in common with Nimita Rajbari in Murshidabad?

Nimita Rajbari is a palatial bungalow in Murshidabad, which was once a stronghold of the royal family in Bengal. it was made by the mighty landlord Dwarkanath became the cultural competitor of Kolkata in 1866 under Choudhury and his son Mahendra Narayan, who also established a ‘Hindu Theatre’ near the grand structure.

The treachery of time and the rising Ganges washed away the grandeur of Rajbari as well as the ‘Hindu Theatre’ in the 1940s and 50s. get lost zamindari In 1955, Chowdhary’s interest in the property also faded with time. 1958 film of Satyajit Ray Jalsaghar Perfectly portrayed the ups and downs of Rajbari. Filmed on Location, Even Shown landlord Instead of saving their flood-affected properties, they drowned in music and art.

The dilapidated structure stands to this day, struggling to remind viewers of its heyday. Not too far away, another Choudhury is desperate to bring back the heyday of a different entity that has lost its sheen in Murshidabad. But it is easy for Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury to hold by-elections in two seats of Murshidabad, Samserganj and Jangipur, along with Bhawanipur on September 30.

There is no Congress candidate in any of these seats. It has struggled to get one in Samserganj, is backing a Left Front candidate in Jangipur and has ‘courtesy’ Mamata Banerjee out of Bhawanipur who is contesting from there.

Zakir Hussain is the Trinamool Congress candidate from Jangipur, while Amirul Islam is contesting from Samserganj as the party’s candidate. The BJP has fielded Sujit Das from Jangipur and Milan Ghosh from Samserganj.

Speaking to News18.com, Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury blamed the “communal politics of the BJP” for the Congress losing its hold in Murshidabad. “I belong to the framework of secular politics. We have become victims of sharp polarization in Bengal. We are suffering from the current political conditions in a society that has become polarised. I belong to a place (Murshidabad) where 70% are Muslims. The Congress party is not fading. What happened… After the ‘communal campaign’ by the BJP and Narendra Modi in the recently concluded assembly elections, Muslims thought to vote for Mamata,” he said.

“In fact, Muslims voted to defeat Narendra Modi, not to secure Mamata Banerjee’s victory. The last nail in the coffin was the firing at Setalkuchi in Cooch Behar in which four Muslims were killed. This was enough to consolidate Muslim votes against the BJP and it caused irreparable damage to Bengal politics when it comes to the Congress party. Mamata Banerjee became an accidental beneficiary of the situation,” Choudhury said.

When asked why the Congress was not fielding its candidate in Congress stronghold Samserganj, Choudhary said, “We wanted to field Zainur Rehman from the seat, but he is not ready to contest the elections.” Because his brother Khalilur Rehman (from Jangipur) is a Trinamool Congress MP. We have a good chance of winning in Samsarganj. We’re trying to persuade him… let’s see.”

volatile competition

Talking to News18, BJP candidate from Samserganj, Milan Ghosh says that the fate of Congress is that of Nimita Rajbari.

“Nimita Rajbari comes under my constituency. It was once famous for its concerts. Now Rajbari and Hindu Theater has become history. The condition of Congress is similar even today. He surrendered before the ruling TMC. The problems people had to face during the golden era of Rajbari are present even today. First it was the rulers, then came the Congress, then the Left and now the TMC is exploiting the people,” Ghosh said.

“This constituency is the most backward region of Bengal. about 60% of the people are bidi workers and some are farmers. The ruling party workers are exploiting them by paying a maximum of Rs 150 for rolling 1,000 beedis. There is no employment here so most of the people have migrated to other states. Most of the voters here are Muslims and they have to face a lot of difficulties.

Referring to BJP’s erstwhile Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Ghosh said the voters of Samserganj should be thankful that Mookerjee along with Dhulian stopped the plan to give the area to East Pakistan.

BJP candidate from Jangipur Sujit Das said the anti-infiltration sentiment would help in his role in the bypoll. “The chances of BJP winning the by-polls are high from this seat. There are about 43 per cent Hindu voters here and they are against illegal infiltration. Most of them are supporters of BJP and are against TMC’s politics of appeasement.

His Trinamool Congress rival Zakir Hussain hit back saying that the deposits of BJP candidates would be forfeited. “During the Covid-19 lockdown, I served people irrespective of their caste and creed. BJP believes in playing the communal card but I am a secular person and I believe in serving people under the guidance of Mamata Banerjee. We are definitely going to win both the seats.”

Polling for all the three seats will be held on 30 September and counting of votes will take place on 3 October.
