Roshan Mathew on Kuruthi role: Was really scared as Ibrahim is so different from Koun Hoon

After delivering nuanced performances in critically acclaimed films like Moothon and Netflix’s Kappella, actor Roshan Mathew has landed another challenging role in director Manu Warrier’s newly released socio-political thriller Kuruthi, set in the dense forests of Erattupetta in Kerala and is around him.

The film, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Murali Gopi, Shine Tom Chacko and Shreena, follows a troubled man, Ibrahim (Roshan), who is having a hard time forgetting the bitter memories of the past. On a dreadful night, a wounded soldier breaks into his house with a prisoner and takes shelter. When a powerful enemy burning with vengeance breaks into their home, Ibrahim is forced to face questions about his own beliefs and beliefs.

Roshan said, “He is one of the most complex characters that I have been trusted with, which is why I was terrified of going into the shoot of this film.” in recent times and has lost almost everything he was living for and he is looking for some kind of meaning to survive and this is where Kuruthi begins and everything that happens after that basically The film is from Ibrahim’s point of view,” said the actor.

Roshan, whose breakthrough in Malayalam cinema came in 2016 with the crime drama Puthiya Niyamam, in which he played an engineering student who raped a woman, said it was extremely difficult to step into Ibrahim’s shoes as he Couldn’t resonate with the character at all.

“I still remember when I was sitting in Prithvi’s house and the film was being narrated to me for the first time and all these characters left a huge impression on me through the narration. After the narration, Prithvi was telling me about the actors he had in mind for each part, and with each name he brought up, I was like, ‘Boom, this is a perfect fit.’ Apart from Prithvi, I have not worked with any actor with me in Kuruthi. So almost everyone seemed to be a perfect fit and then they said, ‘This is the character I wanted you to play.’ And he was the only one I was thinking, ‘Oh, really? I don’t know if I will.’ Because it was so different from who I am and what I’m doing. To be honest, I was scared but this kind of experience during the shoot turned out to be such a rewarding experience for me,” Roshan recalled.

Roshan has worked with Prithviraj for the second time. The pair had earlier worked together in the 2018 psychological drama Koode. Talking about his experience working with Prithviraj again, Roshan said, “I had very little work with him in Jump and I came out of that film, hopefully I can work with him on another project. Want to work. I didn’t think it would happen anytime soon and I certainly didn’t think it would be something like Kuruthi.”

Praising Prithviraj’s dedication towards his work and his ability to multitasking, Roshan said, “I have never seen him busy. I think the most inspiring thing I noticed in him during the shoot of Kuruthi was that every single day he comes on the set and leaves the set with the same amount of energy. He’s the only person on set whose entire cast and crew are trying to match that energy and that’s how kept us on our toes. It was by no means an easy shoot and not a single day was hectic. But a month is incredibly short to make a film like this and I think a lot of it was because of the energy this guy puts into it.

“For the longest time, I tried to figure out how he was doing it and I realized that the thing that keeps him in charge is the process and I came to know about it when I was shooting in his room at night. Met him a few days later. I saw him weary the first time and I was like, ‘Oh, you try.’ I think the best way to make this work is what you do is keep you charged. It was really inspiring for me.”

Kuruthi is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. It is written by Anish Pallal.
