Police deployed to control the situation following violent clashes during Hanuman Jayanti procession in Jahangirpuri, New Delhi on Saturday.

Jahangirpuri ViolenceNine people have been arrested so far, a day after the violence between two groups in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri. Police have registered a case under Sections 147, 148, 149, 186, 353, 332, 323, 427, 436, 307, 120B of IPC along with 27 Arms Act. Nine people, including eight policemen, were injured during the violence. The clash was first reported at around 5.30 pm in Block B and C area near Kushal Cinema. Several teams of Delhi Police are probing how the violence took place. Around 5-6 police personnel and two civilians were injured in this untoward incident. All police units in all districts of the National Capital Region (NCR) have been put on high alert following the communal violence. The Delhi Police Commissioner has warned of strict action against the rioters and said that additional police force is being deployed in the entire NCR. A fierce clash broke out in North-West Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area on Saturday evening when a procession was being taken out on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

A glimpse of what probably happened in the capital

  1. In several videos of the incident going viral on social media, people can be seen pelting stones during the procession. Some were seen waving swords on the road and some abusing them. India TV could not independently verify the video.
  2. A shopkeeper in C Block area of ​​Jahangirpuri alleged that miscreants tried to forcefully enter his shop. After this, the miscreants looted the goods and fled with all the money from the cash counter.
  3. Mohammad Shaheen, who runs a shop adjacent to Jahangir Puri’s C Block mosque, told India TV that the people involved in the Hanuman birth anniversary tried to put up a flag on a mosque and after that the controversy escalated.
  4. After the violence in Jahangirpuri, many videos are becoming viral on social media. One of these videos has surfaced, in which some people are seen raising slogans of ‘Allah Hu Akbar’ while waving swords in their hands. Actually this video is from Jahangirpuri C Block area. The mosque is 50 meters away from the place where people raised slogans and waved swords. The main site of Saturday’s clash was C Block, from where violence and stone-pelting took place.
  5. Preliminary investigation has also revealed that during the procession of Shobha Yatra some people had a scuffle with other community, due to which stones were pelted and vehicles were torched.
  6. The Hindu group said that Muslims started pelting stones, with Muslim residents saying that those involved in the Hindu procession incited violence through sloganeering.
  7. Several residents of the area also said that outsiders were involved in inciting violence.
  8. Delhi Police officials are examining the CCTV footage to identify the rioters.
