Rohit Sharma injured his left thumb while batting in the nets ahead of India’s World Test Championship Final 2023 against Australia.

The Indian men’s cricket team received a scare on Tuesday after Rohit Sharma reportedly got injured during practice ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval in London starting on Wednesday.

While batting in the nets, Rohit injured his left thumb and was immediately treated by Team India physio Kamlesh Jain. He took a tape and appeared to return his gloves back to the net but almost immediately retracted.

Srinivasa Rao, Group Editor Sports of News18, who is at the Oval, told that Rohit did not return to the nets as the Indian team was anyway finishing their season.

Rohit Sharma will be re-assessed once the team returns to the hotel and is likely to play.

India are already missing key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant to battle for the marquee.

It was September 2022 when Bumrah last played international cricket, representing India in T20Is against Australia. He later complained of back pain and ended the series against South Africa and also missed the T20 World Cup. Earlier this year, Bumrah was named in India’s squad for the home ODI series against Sri Lanka in January but was again left out. And also missed the entire IPL 2023.

As for Rishabh Pant, the young wicketkeeper-batsman met with a serious car accident in December last year, in which he suffered head, knee and calf injuries. He had to stay in the hospital for more than a month.

Even though Pant is recovering well, slowly regaining the ability to walk again and participating well in a few matches of IPL 2023, his return to the field is yet unknown.

The alleged injury did not faze the Indian skipper as he appeared before the media.

“Every captain wants to win the championship. I also want to win the championship. It would be good for me if I can win one or two championships. The next five days will be very challenging for us, but we understand that winning the championship is not easy.”
