Rohit Sharma equals MS Dhoni’s record as captain in T20

On Sunday, January 14, Rohit Sharma equaled the famous MS Dhoni’s record as captain, guiding India to a six-wicket triumph over Afghanistan at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. India cruised past the 173-run mark thanks to half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube, clinching the three-match series with two consecutive wins in the opening two games.

Rohit had another dismal batting performance in the game, being removed for a duck. Rohit had also failed to open his account in the series opener in Mohali, where he was run out following a disastrous mix-up with his opening partner Shubman Gill. Pacer cleaned up Rohit on Sunday.

Nonetheless, he accomplished a unique achievement as captain by tying Dhoni for the most T20I wins by an Indian captain. Dhoni concluded his tenure as India’s captain with 41 wins from 72 matches, while Rohit has equaled that total in just 53 games. As captain, Rohit has a victory rate of 77.35% and is already India’s most successful skipper in T20Is.

Dhoni, on the other hand, is the only Indian skipper to have won an ICC T20 World Cup. In 2007, the former India skipper led the Men in Blue to victory in the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa. Under Dhoni, India also reached the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup and the semi-finals of the 2016 T20 World Cup but failed to advance.

While equaling Dhoni’s record for most wins as India’s captain in T20Is, Rohit also became the first Indian skipper to win 12 bilateral T20I series. No Indian skipper had previously won 12 bilateral series in T20Is. However, Rohit became the first to accomplish the feat after India took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Afghanistan.
