Last Update: January 19, 2023, 13:01 IST

east India Cricketer, Robin Uthappa announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket last year. Uthappa was part of the Indian team that won the spectacular ICC T20 World Cup trophy in 2007.

The 37-year-old is currently playing with Dubai Capitals in the International League T20 tournament. An impressive 79 off 46 balls against the Gulf Giants on Monday, 16 January, made him the first player to receive the Green Belt, awarded to the highest run-scorer in the tournament. He is currently the highest run-scorer in the league with 122 runs.

Social media users saw the funny side and flooded posts highlighting the uncanny resemblance between the green belt and the WWE belt.

Posting a picture of the cricketer with the belt, a user wrote, “WWE World Champion Robin Uthappa.”

“So Robin Uthappa is the greatest Royal Rumble winner. And Imran Tahir won the Intercontinental Champion from Gunther,” read another reply.

Some others shared funny memes regarding the photo.

Uthappa decided to call off his Indian Premier League career after the 2022 season. He represented Chennai Super Kings in his last two IPL stints. Making his debut in 2008, Uthappa was a constant presence at the glamorous tournament.

He played 205 IPL matches across all seasons, scoring a total of 4952 runs with a strike rate of 130.35. The former Karnataka batsman was an integral part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team that won the Indian Premier League in 2012 and 2014, scoring cumulative scores of 405 and 660 respectively in those seasons. Incidentally, IPL 2014 was his personal best in terms of run-scoring at an average of 44.

Meanwhile, Dubai Capitals succumbed to the Gulf Giants’ magic on Monday, riding on Robin Uthappa’s swashbuckling knock of 79. The Capitals’ batting order crumbled under pressure even though the 37-year-old got them off to a great start. Sikandar Raza and Rovum Powell helped steer the ship with brilliant cameos, helping the Dubai-based side post a competitive total of 182.

The Giants came out blazing in their opener and skipper James Vince managed a 56-ball 83. He was ably assisted by Gerhard Erasmus who scored a beautiful half-century. It was enough to give his team a six-wicket win with six balls to spare, giving them a perfect record this season.

Dubai Capitals and Gulf Giants will once again battle it out against each other in Sharjah today, January 19 Cricket Stadium.
