Revolt in Akali Dal, Former MP Brar Forms Panel of Seniors Seeking Change in Leadership

A day after the Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) core committee was reconstituted, senior party leader and former MP Jagmeet Brar raised the banner of rebellion against the party in protest against the removal of senior leaders from the committee.

Brar on Wednesday announced the formation of a “panel” of senior politicians who are seeking a change in leadership and policies. The former MP said the group called the ‘SAD Unity Coordination’ panel was only aimed at strengthening the party and preparing a roadmap for revival with a focus on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

He stayed away from directly demanding Sukhbir Badal’s removal from the post of president, but alleged that he was opposing the unconstitutional decisions taken by the leadership in the recent past. “I am not questioning the service and sacrifice made by the Badal family for the party, but 55 years of dominance of one family was a long time. The decisions that have been taken are not according to the constitution of the party.

Supporting expelled party leader, Bibi Jagir Kaur, who contested the SGPC president’s election on her own, Brar said her expulsion was unconstitutional. “The language and behavior meted out to her and the language used against her was inappropriate,” Brar alleged.

He also supported Akali Dal’s media advisor Harcharan Bains who is now the national advisor to the party president. Bains has given his life to the party. He deserves respect.”

Announcing the expansion of the Unity panel, Brar claimed to have added 12 members, including Adesh Pratap Kairon, son-in-law of Akali Dal chief patron Parkash Singh Badal, but was sidelined by the party leadership. Is. His name did not figure in the Akali Dal meetings or in the two committees announced by the party on Wednesday.

The other members include Jagir Kaur, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Ravikaran Singh Kahlon, Dr Rattan Singh Ajnala, Gaganjit Singh Barnala, Sukhwinder Singh Aulakh, Alwinder Singh Pakhoke, Begum Praveen Nusrat, Harbans Singh Manjhpur, Amandeep Singh Mangat and Narinder Singh Kaleka.

Brar said a meeting of the expanded panel would be held on December 9 to chalk out a plan for the party’s revival ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. He said that he has spoken to all those leaders who want the fortunes of the party to turn around.

Brar remarked, “After the election defeat, the SAD dissolved the organizational structure, but people and party workers ask whether the image of the party has improved in any way since then.”
