“Retail business remains under pressure and is finding it difficult to sustain due to limited operating hours and weekend closures,” said RAI’s chief executive officer. Kumar Rajagopalan said in a statement.
In terms of region, RAI said the eastern region witnessed the biggest decline in June this year as compared to June 2019, followed by west and south by 50 per cent and north by 43 per cent.
However, June’s performance was far better than May when overall retail business in India declined by 79 per cent as compared to the same month in 2019.
Showing signs of recovery, the beauty, wellness and personal care category had declined by 57 per cent in June as compared to the same month in 2019. In May, there was a decline of 87 per cent in this category as compared to May 2019.
Similarly, apparel and clothing declined by 52 per cent in June this year as compared to the same month in 2019. In May, there was a negative growth of 77 per cent in May as compared to May 2019.
Footwear too improved marginally with a decline of 61 per cent in June. It had declined by 86 per cent in May as compared to the same month in 2019.
Consumer durables and electronics in June had declined by 46 per cent compared to the same month in 2019. The segment had registered a decline of 71 per cent in May as compared to May 2019.
RAI said quick service restaurants, which saw a drop of 70 per cent in May as compared to the same month in 2019, saw a decline of 10 per cent in the previous month as compared to June 2019.
