Results subject to our order: High Court on Bengal Panchayat elections

Trinamool’s nearest rival BJP won 9,719 gram panchayat seats in Bengal.

Kolkata:
The Trinamool Congress’ victory in Bengal’s rural polls has been affected by the final order of the Calcutta High Court, which is hearing several petitions on poll-related violence and alleged electoral malpractices.

Here are the top 10 points from this big story:

  1. “When the matter is before the Court, it is needless to say that whatever has been done so far, i.e., the conduct of the election and the declaration of the results, shall be subject to the final orders that may be passed in this writ petition. said the High Court today.

  2. The petitioners had demanded re-polling in about 50,000 booths, alleging large-scale violence and electoral malpractices. It was conducted at 696 booths.

  3. The Trinamool Congress won 34,901 out of 63,229 gram panchayat seats, 6,430 panchayat samiti seats and 674 zilla parishad seats.

  4. Trinamool’s nearest rival BJP won 9,719 gram panchayat seats. The CPI(M) won 2,938 and the Congress 2,542. The count is still on.

  5. Nearly 40 deaths since the day the elections were announced have tarnished the Trinamool’s victory. On the day of counting of votes, there was firing in Bhangar of South 24 Parganas, in which one person was killed and a police officer was injured.

  6. Bombs were hurled at Raghunathganj and Shamsherganj in Murshidabad, where seven people died since Friday, this afternoon.

  7. Pointing to the violence that took place before and after the elections, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The BJP had a clean sweep in Uttar Pradesh, but there was hardly any incident of violence across the state.” He alleged that the elected candidates were asked to join Trinamool and told that otherwise they would not get their certificates.

  8. In response, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee attacked fiercely. “I want to ask these incompetent BJP leaders – who do not have the guts to fight us… where are they in Uttar Pradesh when 67 percent of the seats have not been elected? I feel sorry that Ram, Bam and Shyam Plus one, four people formed an alliance. Maha vote. They had planned to create trouble,” he said.

  9. “If you look at the history of the last 25 to 30 years, you will see that violence has happened only in those places. Violence happened in Domkal and our worker was killed. Who won? Opposition. Violence happened in Bhangar. Who did it?” Opposition…Elections have been held on a total of 71000 booths and in how many incidents have happened? Around 60 booths maximum?” Ms. Banerjee said.

  10. A BJP fact-finding team headed by Mr. Prasad is in Bengal to probe the allegations of violence and malpractices. Last week, Governor CV Anand Bose also went to Delhi to brief Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the matter.
