With the noise of campaigning in Punjab coming to a halt, the countdown for voting for the assembly elections has begun. Voting will begin at 8 am on February 20, which will continue till 6 pm. During the election campaign, all the parties in the state tried every trick to woo the voters. In this election, all eyes are on those seats in the state from where different political giants are in the fray.

This time the hot seats of Punjab include Amritsar East, Moga, Dhuri, Bhadaur, Chamkaur Sahib, Patiala, Lambi, Jalalabad and Samrala. The state’s oldest leader and five-time Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal is in the fray on the long seat. Age and health are becoming the biggest problems of Badal Badal. Captain Amarinder Singh is contesting from Patiala seat for the first time on his party ticket. The cadre vote of the Congress has gone out of his hands and this is the biggest challenge before him.

Congress’ Navjot Sidhu and Akali Dal’s Bikram Majithia are fighting for prestige in Amritsar East seat. For the first time in 18 years, Sidhu has faced such a direct challenge. The under-current here regarding AAP candidate Jeevanjot Kaur has raised the concerns of both the veterans. Current CM Charanjit Singh Channi is contesting from two seats Bhadaur and Chamkaur Sahib and in both the places he is facing challenge from Aam Aadmi Party. Bhagwant Mann, who has been declared the CM face of Aam Aadmi Party, is contesting from Dhuri seat in Sangrur district. Mann is not a resident of Dhuri, so the challenge of being an outsider there is the biggest challenge for him.

Bollywood actor Sonu Sood’s sister Malvika Sood is in the fray from Moga seat on a Congress ticket. Being the first election, election management is the biggest challenge before them. On the other hand, Jalalabad is Raisikh dominated area and from here Jattsikh Sukhbir Badal is the candidate of Akali Dal. After becoming his MP in 2019, the Akali candidate has lost in the by-election here. The wind of change is a big challenge for them.

Balbir Singh Rajewal, the big face of the farmers’ movement in the Samrala seat of Ludhiana district, is in the ground. This is Rajewal’s first election and he has no experience in election management. Now how is the performance of these political stalwarts in this election, it will be known on March 10, when the election results will come.
