Renault-Nissan India plant complying with COVID-19 norms: Report

A Chennai court ordered a security check at the Renault-Nissan plant, which employs over 8,000 people, after workers filed a petition saying they felt unsafe.

Renault-Nissan’s India plant is following Tamil Nadu state’s coronavirus safety guidelines for carmakers, according to a report reviewed by Reuters from the southern state government’s Department of Industrial Safety.

Workers in Tamil Nadu for global automakers such as Renault-Nissan, Hyundai and Ford plants had halted work for several days in May over safety concerns related to the coronavirus.

“The compliance of the uniform guidelines has been verified by the team of officers in the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health,” the report said, adding that members of the union and company management were present during the inspection.

The safety report showed that 1,442 doses of the vaccine had been given to workers at the Renault-Nissan plant as of 3 July, compared to 966 on 17 June.

An audit of Hyundai, Ford and Renault-Nissan plants last month revealed that three out of four workers had not been vaccinated, and one in seven workers at these companies had contracted the virus. Twenty one had died.
