‘Remove the content justifying beheading Udaipur otherwise…’: Center warns social media

New Delhi: Taking another preventive measure, the Center on Friday directed social media platforms to remove content glorifying the brutal Udaipur beheading incident in the name of avenging insults to Islam. “Social media platforms need to remove content that encourages, glorifies or justifies the brutal murder in Udaipur,” a notice issued by the Ministry of Electronics and IT said.

Kanhaiya Lal, a resident of Udaipur in Rajasthan, was murdered on Tuesday by two knife wielders Riyaz Akhtari and Ghosh Mohammad, who posted a horrific video of the crime online, taking responsibility for the “beheading”.

“Via this notice, you are directed to ensure that as part of your obligation of due diligence, safety and trust, you proactively and promptly disseminate any and all Content such as text messages, audios, remove in the form of video, photo or any other form, which encourages / glorifies / justifies this murder and murder, with a view to incitement of any kind and with a view to disrupt public order and restore public peace and harmony, “The notice issued on June 29 said.

The video of the brutal murder was posted online and several instances of social media handles and accounts glorifying and justifying the killing have emerged. The incident triggered widespread protests in some parts of the country and prohibitory orders were imposed to control the law and order situation.

Later the police caught both the culprits and the case was handed over to the NIA.
