Mysore: A few days after the name change of the central government Rajeev Demands to rename Gandhi Khel Ratna award, a major tiger reserve and a Sanskrit institution after legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand – both named after the former PM.
Recently there has been a demand to change the name of Rajiv Gandhi National Park. Nagarhole, And Shri Rajiv Gandhi Complex of Central Sanskrit University at Sringeri in Chikkamagaluru district. An online petition has been started on change.org to rename the National Park spread in Kodagu district after the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army and Field Marshal Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa.
The petition, initiated by Naveen Madappa and Vinay Kaipanda, is addressed to the Prime Minister’s Office, Karnataka Chief Minister and Mysore MP Pratap Simha.
When contacted, the MP said that the demand is justified. “I will write a letter to the CM and the central government in this regard,” he said, adding: “What is the relationship between Nagarhole and Rajiv Gandhi? State Congress leaders named it after Rajiv to please the Gandhi family. Wing Commander BS Sudarshan, a retired Indian Air Force officer and a Kannada writer, who has also launched a campaign to change the name, said after naming all institutions and projects. Nehru-Gandhi Families are historical mistakes. “If the projects are part of Amethi or Rae Bareli parliamentary constituencies, there is no objection to naming them after the former PM. Why are the places here named after Rajiv?”
“Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya should be renamed after Adi Shankaracharya, the Indian philosopher propounding the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta. We should name places and institutions after achievements that have brought name and fame to particular fields. Name people. And the society should inspire. Sringeri is associated with Adi Shankaracharya,” he said.
When contacted, BJP National Secretary CT Ravi endorsed the sentiments of the petitioners. “Public debate is needed. No one will object if the Pilot Training School is named after Rajiv Gandhi. Why should a Sanskrit college be named after him?” He asked.
Congress leaders, however, said that the BJP leaders have done name change politics to divert public attention from the real issues.
