There is a relief news in the country amid the increasing threat of the new variant ‘Omicron’ of the corona virus. Dr. Rakesh Mishra, director of the Tata Institute of Genetics and Society and former head of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Center (CSIR) for Cellular and Molecular Biology, said that the corona vaccine is also effective on the new variant. The vaccine will act as a shield to protect against corona.

Reaching mild signs of infection is a good sign
Dr Mishra further said that earlier this year when the country was facing the second wave of corona, the delta variant was extremely dangerous at that time. Now the Omicron from South Africa is more contagious than the delta variant. However, it is a matter of relief that this virus will reach the major cities of the country with mild symptoms, which is a very good sign.

Hybrid immunity will benefit
He added that hybrid immunity will be effective against the new variant. It is being recognized scientifically. I think it has to be protective. Maybe a little less right, but the vaccine can be very helpful in this.

Dr Mishra told that due to infection, natural immunity is available. Vaccine immunity comes from the vaccine and in hybrid immunity the person who has been infected earlier also gets vaccinated. Further talking about hybrid immunity, it is said that it has the potential to work on vaccinated people and give them protection. He said, ‘If people have had a natural infection and they have also taken the vaccine together, then this should happen. In big cities, many people have unknowingly infected. That’s why a lot of people will have hybrid immunity.

Sampling of all required
Dr Mishra said that in the last few days we have detected two-four cases, but how many samples are we sending for genome sequencing? Only if we do 100% sequencing, then you can be sure how many people have this variant and some don’t.

Many people with mild symptoms or no symptoms are spreading it. The problem with this infection is that 70 to 80% of people do not have symptoms and people are feeling it common cold and cough. In such a situation, the risk of its decision is increasing.

Omicron more contagious than Delta
Dr Mishra further said that Omicron may be more contagious than the delta variant that brought the second wave to India earlier this year. However, he believed that not being serious about the new variant was a good sign.

This is a wake up call for us
The former chief of CSIR says that “It is a wake up call for us that the pandemic is not over yet. We are in a stronger position than the first and second wave but we should not be careless.
