Rejected by Center for R-Day parade, Bengal and Tamil Nadu display their tableaux in state capitals

West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are all set to show their tableaux that were rejected by the central government for the Republic Day parade. While the Mamata Banerjee government displayed its Netaji tableau on the Red Road, the MK Stalin government’s tableau depicting the contribution of the freedom fighters of Tamil Nadu to the Indian independence movement was displayed in Chennai.

CM Stalin had expressed disappointment over the exclusion of Tamil Nadu’s tableau from the Republic Day parade, and even wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention.

Describing the tableau to PM Modi, Stalin wrote, “The design featured the famous freedom fighter VOC, who founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in 1906 to compete against the British during the Indian independence movement. The design also featured Subramaniam Bharathi, popularly known as Maha Kavi Bharathiar, who instilled patriotism in the minds of people with his fiery patriotic songs and writings during the Indian independence movement.

He also said that the back side of the tableau was designed to show an idol of Queen Velu Nachiyar, who was riding a horse with a sword in hand and accompanied by female soldiers. “She was the first Indian queen to wage war with the East India Company in India. She was the queen of the Sivagangai region from 1780 to 1790 and blew up the East India Company’s ammunition stores by arranging a suicide attack,” wrote Stalin .
