The department had registered 4,600 two-wheelers under the auto-generated number series ‘DL..SEX…’ between October 15 and November 28.
Taking cognizance of the matter, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Friday issued a notice to the department asking it to immediately change its vehicle registration number with the letters ‘sex’.
DCW also sought details of all vehicles given ‘DL..SEX..’ series numbers.
“The DCW in this case was approached by a girl who had recently purchased a scooty and obtained a vehicle registration number containing the word ‘sex’. The girl informed commission That she was facing severe harassment because of her registration number, as people taunted her and even teased her. She further said that due to all this, she is facing a lot of difficulties in commuting and is not able to go out for essential work.
DCW Head Swati Maliwal He said he has asked the transport department to furnish details about the total number of vehicles registered under the ‘sex’ series. “It is very unfortunate that people can be so petty and degrading that the woman is facing so much harassment. A transport department official said that ‘DL..SEX..’ is a recent auto-generated series for vehicle registration. “We have stopped the registration on this chain due to sensitivity. The registration chain is automatically generated by the system. If we receive requests, we can change the registration number on a case-to-case basis,” the official said.
“We have not received any objection on the number from any registered vehicle owner. The registration of vehicles under ‘Sex’ has been stopped due to its sensitivity. We are ready to change the registration number on receipt of complaint. In the new number, ‘SEX’ will be replaced with ‘SEY’, while other letters and numbers will remain the same.”
