New Delhi: Moderna Inc’s chief medical officer Paul Burton said he suspects the new version would make existing vaccines ineffective and, if it does, a new vaccine could be available as early as next year.
During an interview with the BBC on Sunday, Burton said, “We should be aware of the potential of existing vaccines to provide protection over the next few weeks.”
“If we have to make a new vaccine, I think it’s going to be early 2022, before it’s going to be available in really large quantities,” he said.
“The remarkable thing about the mRNA vaccine, the Moderna platform, is that we can move very quickly,” Burton said.
The Moderna chief said the best protection available right now is to take vaccines.
“If people are on the fence, and you haven’t been vaccinated, get vaccinated. It’s a dangerous looking virus, but I think we have many tools in our arsenal now to fight it.”
Moderna said in a press release Friday that the company is testing existing vaccines against the Omicron variant. “Beginning 2021, Moderna has developed a comprehensive strategy to anticipate new forms of anxiety.
