Responding to the government’s reported decision to “stop” the demolition drive in the Union Territory, the former chief minister said, “It was because of people’s protest”.

National Conference President Farooq Abdullah said on Monday that it is the prerogative of the government to reduce the number of army in Jammu and Kashmir.

“It is a matter for the government. How much they increase or decrease is their prerogative. I have no say in it,” he told reporters at the National Conference headquarters here.

The Lok Sabha member from Srinagar was replying to questions about a media report which claimed that the government is considering a phased withdrawal of the Army from the hinterland in Kashmir.

Reacting to the government’s reported decision to “stop” the demolition drive in the Union Territory, the former chief minister said “it was because of people’s protest”.

“It happened because of the noise made by the people. Had people not made noise, they would have intensified the campaign. People should remember that they have the power to shake the government.”
