Violence erupted at Red Fort on 26 January during farmers’ protest against three agricultural bills

The Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested Buta Singh, an accused in the Red Fort violence case on 26 January.

On Monday, another person Gurjot Singh was arrested from Punjab and on Monday remanded to three days custody of Delhi Police by a court here.

Police said a reward of Rs 1 lakh has been announced for his arrest. According to the police, Gurjot was an aide of Gurjant Singh, who had allegedly hoisted the Sikh religion flag on the dome of the Red Fort during the January 26 violence.

Protesting farmers clashed with police that day during a tractor rally against three new central agricultural laws and stormed the Red Fort, hoisted religious flags on its domes and injured several policemen.

The court had recently summoned all the accused on June 29, taking cognizance of the chargesheet in the case.

Actor-activist Deep Sidhu, accused of being the main conspirator of the violence, is currently out on bail.

“After the incident, Gurjot Singh spoke to the media, where he revealed his role in the flag hoisting incident at the historical monument.

On that basis he was wanted in the case and a reward of Rs one lakh was announced on his arrest,” said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).

Police told after interrogation that Singh used to watch provocative videos of Lakkha Sidhana and Deep Sidhu in connection with the farmers’ agitation on YouTube.

In December 2020, he visited Singhu border twice to take part in the protest against the new agricultural laws framed by the Centre.

Police said that on the appeal of Sarwan Singh Pandher and Satnam Singh Pannu, leaders of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti, he along with friends and relatives of his village decided to participate in the tractor parade.
