RBI Monetary Policy Meeting: The Reserve Bank of India, or RBI, is all set to hold a press conference on the decisions taken by it on Friday, April 8. monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting which started on 6th April and will end today. The meeting will begin at 10 am on the day where RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das will announce the revised economic projections and the decisions taken by the central bank on the interest rate trajectory.
Economists expect the central bank not to change its repo rates during the first quarter RBI MPC meeting of the current financial year. According to a Reuters poll, the RBI may increase interest rates only in the August MPC meeting.
The six-member rate-setting panel is meeting at a critical time when inflation rates have skyrocketed amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine – which have also resulted in fuel prices rising among others. Markets have also been volatile of late. The prices of essential commodities are also skyrocketing and all these factors have prompted RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to focus on inflation rather than growth this time.
“We expect the MPC to start increasing the policy rates starting with the normalization of the policy corridor between the repo and reverse repo rate. We expect the RBI to hike the reverse repo rate in its April 2022 policy meeting.”
