New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma presented the state’s highest civilian award ‘Assam Baibhav’ to veteran industrialist Ratan Tata at an event held in Mumbai on Wednesday.
Taking to his Twitter handle, the Assam Chief Minister wrote, “Had the privilege to honor @tatatrusts Chairman Shri Ratan Naval Tata with ‘Assam Baibhav’, our State’s highest civilian award, at Mumbai today. The visionary industrialist & philanthropist has made exceptional contribution towards furthering cancer care in Assam.”

The award was to be given to the eminent industrialist at a ceremony in Guwahati on January 24. However, due to personal reasons, Tata was unable to attend the function.
The award, that carries a medal and a cash amount of Rs 5 lakh, has been conferred on Tata, who is also the chairman of Tata Trusts, for his exceptional contribution towards furthering cancer care in the north-eastern state, according to an official release.
The Assam Chief Minister further said that the Tata Sons and the Assam government are building a big cancer care network together, in which Ratan Tata has a big contribution.

Notably, Tata Trusts had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Assam government earlier in the year 2018 in order to deliver comprehensive cancer care, and ensure quality treatment of cancer patients at an affordable range in the state.
Governor Jagdish Mukhi had conferred the state’s two other civilian awards – ‘Assam Saurav’ and ‘Assam Gaurav’ to 18 other distinguished personalities in different fields on January 24.
