Mumbai: IIT-Bombay jumped one place to be ranked among the top three educational institutions in the country with IIT Madras and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in the sixth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released on Thursday.

Overall, most of the institutes in Mumbai fell in the ranking, including TISS, Mumbai University and NMIMS. The Institute of Chemical Technology has moved up seven places to the 27th position.
St Xavier’s didn’t make it to the top 100 colleges for the first time – its rank fell from 90 in 2020 to the 101-150 band. college of social work Mumbai College to make it to the top 100, but its rank fell nine places.
MU dropped 6 places, 12 state institutes in top 100
Many colleges in Delhi are in the top 100 of the country. A senior academic said that the undergraduate programs offered by Delhi University are much better than those offered by other universities, but these rankings cannot be the only criterion for assessing quality.
In the overall category, 12 institutes/universities from Maharashtra are in the top 100. IIT-Bombay is leading followed by Savitribai Phule Pune University with 20th rank. Four deemed universities also made it to the top 100. Mumbai University came down from 95 to 96 and TISS from 57 to 70.
MU achieved an A++ NAAC rating last week, but as a university, its rank has dropped six places. MU’s scores were influenced by the perception parameter.
NIRF was launched to create a national framework to rank higher education institutions. Although the ranking system may be linked to government grants in the future, it is currently voluntary and not all institutions participate in the process. NIRF assesses colleges on the basis of teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.
IIT-Bombay also secured 3rd rank in Engineering category and B-School on campus secured 10th rank under Management category. Director of the institute, Subhasis Choudhary said, “IIT-Bombay always strives to provide the best all round career training for our students and focus on research and entrepreneurial activities which have a greater impact on the society. Our efforts will continue and such recognition by NIRF will further strengthen our resolve to work hard on these aspects.”
In the new research category, IIT Bombay, TIFR, ICT and Homi Bhabha National Institute made it to the top 25. ICT improved their scores in teaching, learning and resources (TLR). Vice Chancellor Anirudh Pandit said that ICT has performed remarkably well despite being funded by the state. “Despite the pandemic, our research activities continued uninterrupted. At most our labs were closed for only 3-4 months. And at other times, we had at least 200 research students working with the utmost care in our laboratories. This is reflected in our overall performance at NIRF.”
Except for the College of Social Work at 71st and St. Xavier’s, no college in Mumbai made it to the top 200. St Xavier’s Principal Rajendra Shinde said that since scores of colleges below 100th rank are not displayed on the portal, it would be impossible to find it. where he performed poorly. “The pandemic may have had an impact on our results, but we need to improve and act in a meaningful way,” he said. He said that the average experience of the faculty has come down drastically due to the retirement of many senior teachers. The college scores had improved in the last few editions of NIRF. Only 3-4 colleges in the state make it to the top 100 every year. This year, Ferguson College in Pune also dropped from 42 to 96.
